Rex gets a mention in "Smart Money" magazine

I was at the doctor's office yesterday and while waiting (and waiting) I was reading through the June 04 issue of "Smart Money." The article on European travel was of interst and -- low and behold -- Rex was quoted as an expert.

Of course, I don't remember what he was quoted about.

Now, I wonder what area of travel I could get quoted as an expert? Here are suggestions for my area of expertise:

- Cherokee, NC -- tacky.
- It's your vacation, do what you want to do.
- You have to try on the shoes first to see if they are comfy.
- It's never too early for ice cream.

NC, your last suggestion is the best!

I can add: though shall try chocolate at any and all vacation destinations.

Congratulations, Rex!

It's never too early for frozen cheesecake covered in chocolate on a stick. Ah, Key West.

Congrats to Rex. (Smart Money must watch our board, since I picked up quote there too, prior to registration.)

Congrats Rex! Of course, we Fodorite's all knew you were an expert before "Smart Money" did.

Well, I finally got an issue. I feel like I mentioned many of the ideas sprinkled throughout the article - - but the "tip" attributed to me comes off sounding stupid. Rent a smaller car to save money? Well, that's pretty obvious and certainly not unique to Europe. And not likely to appeal to the readers of Smart Money!

I feel like I never said anything like that - - I rent a car big enough to be comfortable when I travel in Europe - - and I have never once rented one of the really tiny cars. I did recommend renting diesel when you get a choice, but that is not mentioned.

And my "tip" about renting to avoid drop charges from one country to another got quite twisted around. I don't know how one can find a car rental company willing to do this. Far better is to plan your pickup/return at the borders of countries so that you have the option of deciding in which country you want to return the car.

Anyhow, thanks for the nice comments of all those above.

I think two other people mentioned in the article are contributors here as well - - Pauline (and they didn't get the name of slowtrav.com right!) and "John Bermont". I suggested that the author contact Pauline and a few other "personalities" from here on this forum.

Best wishes,

Rex

Congratulations Rex. I know what you mean, though. I had a letter published in AXP Departures and they edited in such a way that one of my comments had a whole new meaning.
