Revised Scotland Itinerary- better?
1st, thanks to everyone who replied to our previous itinerary & question about drive from Glasgow to Uig. We're still planning a lot of driving but there are 2 of us to take turns, and our holidays always involve lots of driving. Tried to guess times based on previous comments and what we saw listed in coach tours, so hope this is more doable. We did add more time in the Skye/Lewis areas so we wouldn't be as rushed there. Does this sound better?
Day 1- arrive in Glasgow, pick up rental car. Overnight in area of Tarbet/ Criantarich.
Day 2- Drive to Uig (Skye, via bridges). Catch evening ferry (6pm) to Tarbert. Overnight on Lewis.
Day 3- Spend day on Lewis, visit Blackhouse Village & Calanais. Overnight on Lewis.
Day 4- Ferry from Tarbert to Uig. Driving day, overnight in Achnasheen/Dingwall area.
Day 5- Driving day, overnight in Pitlochry or Perth area.
Day 6- Drive to Edinburgh, visit castle in afternoon. Overnight in Edinburgh area.
Day 7- Visit Rosslyn Chapel or New Lanark Heritage Site, drive to Glasgow area. Overnight in Glasgow.

just a couple of very quick takes right now . . .
- Why are you sailing back to Uig to get to Dingwall? I'd take the ferry from Storonoway to Ullapool and drive to Dinwall from there.
And, your day 5 is listed a a "driving day" Dingwall to Pitlochry is not a dreadful drive at all - you'll have lots of time to see things
Still way too much driving IMHO - but 10000% better than the first cut

Hi janisj,
thanks for replying
To answer your question, it seemed that the Uig-Tarbert ferry was shorter and less $ than Stornoway, but we don't have anything booked yet so we will look into it- may have misread the Calmac site the first time round!

Rosslyn Chapel takes about an hour and here's my paragraph on New Lanark:
On our way back to Edinburgh we made a detour to see New Lanark (http://www.newlanark.org/index2.shtml) which became a model and profitable mill town under the direction of Robert Owen. He demonstrated that better working and living conditions for the workers did not necessarily eliminate profitability. Unfortunately we went there on the day of Lanark’s annual parade which meant that there was no traffic allowed through the town until 1:30 and it is impossible to get to New Lanark without driving through Lanark itself. Our visit was a little rushed, but very much worthwhile. The one element that I disliked intensely was the little ride through an exhibit trying to give us a sense of life in New Lanark. It was aimed at 9 to 12 year old children and was almost an insult to an adult mind. I do not think that it can be by-passed if one wants to see the actual working mill. I think that New Lanark would be a good day’s excursion, with a picnic somewhere upstream in the woods. Most of the buildings have now been converted either to condominiums and a fancy hotel, but Robert Owen’s house is as it was, and some of the houses can be visited with a reconstruction of the life of the worker’s families. The schoolhouse can also be visited and the staff offers friendly information.

Day 1- I think is fine. I'd stay on the Loch rather than Crianlarich, which is pretty soul-less.
Day 2- You have left masses of time on Day 2. I wonder if you've thought abouts taying on Harris? I've always wanted to stay near Scarista, and I have to say, I have no desire at all to stay on Lewis.
Day 3- Calanais, OTOH is one of my top 10 places in Scotland, not yet seen.
Day 4/5. You have left masses of time. Do go south via Ullapool, if for no other reason than to ring the changes. Mind you, if the wether's foul, the crossing is much worse.
Day 6 Pitlochry to Edinburgh is 1 1/2 hours at most. Perth is even closer. So you can do more if you want
Day 7- I struggle with this fascination with Rosslyn, but I hope you go to and like New Lanark.
That's a good itinerary. Congratulations for getting off the beaten track
