Lisa, where and what did you see in Sicily and what would you recommend as "must sees"? We're going in Sept. and have been before to Palermo and Taormina. This time we want to do the west coast (Trapani, Erice, Marsala, etc.) We also will be driving.

Please let me know about your trip to Sicily? I am planning to visit Rome, Florence, ,and then take a hopper to Paliamo? (think that's how you spell it), and spend 4 days. Since my great great great grandmother is from there, I was hoping to find "family" somewhere in that area. My only problem, is that my Italian is really..bad!....Can you tell me what to do there, and where to go. I am also told to stay away from the food in Rome, as well as stay at the Best Westerns. Any feed back> Please email me since sometimes these posts get lost...thanks...
Angela

We had our car delivered to our hotel in Palermo & getting out of Palermo was definitely a nightmare! However once on the "autostrada" the rest of the driving was manageable. We liked the freedom of going when & where we wanted. Did not drive in any other big cities. Did not get to Western Sicily so no info on Trapani, etc.

I can recommend a couple:
1. Grand Hotel des Palmes (4-stars)
2. Centrale Palace (4-stars)
3. Massimo Plaza Hotel (3-stars)
4. Hotel Joli (3-stars)
5. Hotel Gardenia (2-stars)

These all have air conditioning and private facilities. They are all centrally located. Read my review of the Massimo Plaza in the Hotels section of this website. The BEST and MOST EXPENSIVE hotel in town is, of course, the 5-star Grand Hotel Villa Igea. It is a bit out-of-reach (need to use taxis)
