With the economy being what it is, you shouldn't have any problem making lunch or dinner reservations at most places the same day if you call or drop by early enough. La Catapa was busier than Laredo because of the difference in prices and was packed on a Wednesday night in the middle of the month.

One of our other favorites in the same neighborhood, Arzábal, Dr. Castelo, 2, had a couple of tables still available that evening when we stopped by for a tapa and wine.

Robert, thanks.

Once again, my visit will begin on a Sunday, when the offerings are slim. But I think I've found a few interesting places and will put together a list in a few weeks and will await your comments, if you have the time. We only have four nights before moving on to Seville, so I have to be selective!

On Sunday you can have dinner at Arzábal, at Mendendez y Pelayo, 13, facing the Retiro Park. Go early for tapas and then dinner.

Carlos Tartiere-Couzapin (Asturian) on C/Menorca is also open on Sunday night.

On Tuesday you might want to try Restaurante MEATing, C/ Villalar 4, very Navarran (www.restaurantemeating.com).

For something different, you can try the Poncelet Cheese Bar (www.ponceletcheesebar.es). We were there last Spring. Very interesting. Every dish includes a cheese serving. My type of place.

Thanks, Robert.

We did have a good dinner at Arzabal during our last visit, although I liked T.Laredo more.
Carlos Tartiere looks inviting, but not sure if it is "special"enough considering that we have only four dinners this time..

Have you tried Cesta de Recoletos for tapas? (open Sunday during the day, I believe)

Gastromaquia?

We haven't tried Cesta de Recoletos as yet, not enough time the last trip, and Gastromaquia will have to wait until the next time we're in town.

We've always had a good time and a good meal at Carlos Tartiere. They are usually very busy on Sundays, mostly those from the neighborhood.

Thanks for the quick response! I did peek into Carlos Tartiere on a Sunday and it was, indeed, a bustling and convivial scene..families, couples, groups--looked like a really solid place.

Although I am not leaving until October, I already have a list, which I will post here once I return home to my notes....

El Club Allard (??) Lua (??) thoughts?

Ekscrunchy, one place that I´m liking this year is Taberna Los Gallos in Puigcerdá, just behind Serrano and the Archeological Museum.
It is not very expensive, and specially lovely now in summer with the rooftop terrace ... and a place where you MUST book in advance.
