Samantha, my best friend is taking her daughter (my goddaughter) to Spain as a high school grad present. I prepared a list of restaurant recommendations and ideas from previous trips to Spain. None of them are exhorbitantly expensive. I will be e-mailing you a copy (Microsoft Word document).

Samantha,
Make sure to check out the past posts from Maribel. She provides excellent information - she should work for Fodors. I recently took a trip to Bilbao and S.S. and was able to stop at several of her recomended places, all were great.

In particular, though, I would like to mention Restaurant Arzak in San Sebastian, where I had one of the most pleasant meals I have ever had. Price range is considered expensive, but I am from New York City, were a comparable meal would have been through the roof. It is a world renowned restaurant, and yet the service was warm and laid back, yet extremely attentive. As a matter of fact, when our server realized that we were American, and having some trouble translating some of the more unusual items on the menu, she told us she would have her co-worker who spoke English come over to help us out. Well, it ended up that her coworker was Elena Arzak, the daughter of the owner and the executive chef. She took the time to come out of the kitchen and explain each item on the tasting menu for us. So I was very impressed with the service, but that was nothing compared to the food. The menu de degustacion, as the tasting menu is known, was five courses, if I remember correctly. But Ms. Arzak added an extra desert course for us. Two desert courses! I almost had to be removed in a wheel barrow I was so full.
San sebastian has so many excellent resaturants, and unfortunately this was the only one of the best that I was able to try. But it was well worth the price, and I highly recomend it.

By the way, I made my reservation through their website:
http://www.paisvasco.com/arzak/

Samantha,
Yes, do a search and look for Maribel's postings in particular. There is also another post with a listing of favorite restaurants. I can't remember the poster, but it is a good one.

Don't miss Casablanca for excellent and out of the ordinary tapas in Seville.
Bits of veal with wild mushrooms, deep fried bacalao (salt cod) with saffron and mint, and any of their potato dishes makes for a four star eating. experience.I posted the address and phone previously. Do a search and if you can't find it, email me at home where I THINK I still have the it. If you read Bon Appetit it was mentioned in either the April or May issue.

Hi Samantha,
I'll email you directly a list of my favorites in your cities. Also Monica has posted hers on her travel page.
You'll have great eating everywhere, particularly in S.S. and Bilbao. The Basque Country cuisine is fenomenal, or as a Food & Wine article put it: "Basque Country Cuisine-the best food you've NEVER heard of". There's an old Basque proverb: "To know how to eat is to know enough"!(My motto in life...)

Hi Michele: Look for an email on Galicia (and other items)

Hi Tom: So glad you had a wonderful meal at Arzak! Sounds like Elena is holding down the fort for her Dad very, very well. The US and Spanish food press says she's one of Spain's rising culinary stars. I've reserved a table there July 5, so thanks very much for your report and your vote of confidence.
Glad you had a pleasant journey.

Hi Maira: Hope to meet you and Monica at your next NYC Fodor's luncheon in the fall. Wanted to attend the recent one but couldn't get away.

Maribel
