Restaurants in Tuscany

We'll be in Tuscany and Umbria for about ten days in May. Can some of you give us some "must eat here" restaurant ideas? It may help if you specify if it's for lunch or dinner.

Thank you.

Our best meal of our week in Tuscany was in a gorgeous little village called Castiglione d'Orcia and it is highly recommended. The name is Trattoria Il Cassero in Piazza C. Battisti, 1. Click on my screen name to see my trip report of a month ago.

Hi BB,

I think that I Sette Consoli in Orvieto is worth the journey.

I'm interested in this subject, too.

More specifically, I would appreciate mentions of good places for a fine lunch. Dinners will be in Montalcino (we don't want to drive after dark).

Thanks, all.

The area is so large, it would help knowing what towns you were going to visit, but here are some of our favorites:

Umbria:
Coccorone, Montefalco
Da Pescatore, Pigge, outside of Trevi
Taverna del Lupo, Gubbio
Grotta di Azzura, Norcia
La Trota, Rivodutri, which is in Lazio, just over the border and near Lake Piediluco.

Tuscany:

Da Delfina, Artimino
Latte di Luna, Pienza
Romano, Viareggio
Gennarino, Livorno
Il Battibecco, Impruneta

BobandBunkie,

My favorites of the last 2 trips:

Spello: Il Mulino, dinner only
Assisi: Paradiso de la Terme, dinner, lunch?
Montalcino: Grappolo Blu, dinner only
Pienza: Latte di Luna, lunch & dinner
Chianti: La Badia di Coltibuono, lunch & dinner

Did not care at all for Taverna del Lupo in Gubbio. Very overpriced, stuffy, poor food and even bad wine!

Buon apetito!

For lunch, I agree with Dayle's recommendaiton for Badia di Coltibuno in Chianti, outside of Radda. I also recommend Ristorante Lamole, in Lamole outside of Greve.

Any particular restaurant in Perugia?

We're thinking we'll train there from Rome and stay a while before picking up the rental car.
(That way we only have to drive out! )

We had lunch outside Montalcino at Fattoria dei Barbi and it could easily be one of our best meals in Italy - mixed grilled meats for my husband, wild boar ragout for me. Very welcoming host and staff, charming setting. It's in an old building on a working vineyard. We went for the tour (Brunello), stayed for the lunch, visited the museum on the grounds. A simply wonderful few hours!
