Hi oliverg,
Lots to choose from.
The restaurant in the Hotel Victoria in Glion is a good one, not fancy. But having a drink on the terrace afterward would be a great cap to an evening. You could take the funicular up to Glion then a taxi back to Montreux.
The Ermitage is a favorite with locals; it has one Michelin star and 17/20 Gault Milau:

It's right on the lake.
The Pont de Brent has three Michelin stars:

Another good place is the Italian La Rouvenaz (just across the street from the Tourist Info office on the lake) with great seafood and Italian food. Its wine bar is very, very popular.
Another favorite, again Italian, is the Hostellerie de Geneve in Vevey, right on the central market.
Also love the Auberge du Rivaz, but it's in the vineyards of the Lavaux in Rivaz. Also love the Cafe de Paris in the Hotel de l'Aigle in Villeneuve. These are more local joints --
Have fun!

Hi again,
Sorry but I have to add an opinion about suze's remark that one should have a car to get to the Auberge de Rivaz. I never have a car when I visit Montreux, and I always get to Rivaz at least once during my visits. It's very easy.
The dock for the lake ferry is just across the street from the Auberge, so that's the easiest way -- but of course check the schedules so you know when and how you'll arrive and depart.
The local trains stop at Rivaz, and the tiny station is again just across the street from Rivaz. Trains run from Montreux about once an hour and take 15 minutes. Schedules at
www.rail.ch
I particularly enjoy having a late lunch at the Auberge. So I usually take the train to Chexbres, then take my time walking down to Rivaz through the vineyard trails; I cap off my walk with a meal at the Auberge then usually take the ferry home.
Hope this helps!

Thank *you*, suze! As you may know from your friends who live there, in the summertime there is a greasy gray cloud that hangs over the lake, partly due to car fumes. So, I really try to get folks not to drive in the area and always steer folks to the easy and best way to take transport.

my friend lived in Vevey, now in Montreux. she owns a car but we *rarely* go fetch it out of th parking lot. for going to Lausanne or Vevey we hop the train. or actually between Monetreux & Vevey's downtown areas the bus is even easier.
