Restaurant reservations in Tuscany

Hi everyone,
We'll be in Tuscany from the end of April until mid-May. I am aware that is a very popular time to travel in Italy. I have read so many wonderful restaurant stories on this site that I am wondering if I should make dinner reservations before we leave home. Your opinions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

We're going in mid May also and made reservations for special restaurants now.

Not every night of course but it doesn't hurt to plan ahead.

Hi S,

If it is a super-special place, definitely.

Otherwise, the night or morning before is OK.

I don't know where you plan to eat and I don't know what a super-special place is (in whose eyes?) but in May I would absolutely not wait until the morning of to reserve if you have a particular place in mind. You might get a table in a high profile tourist place at the last minute, but if you want to eat in a place popular with locals with a reputation for great food without pretention, you should reserve a day or two ahead, more on the weekends, to avoid disappointment. I am basing these comments on my last trip to Tuscany which was in JANUARY! Yes, we could have gotten in to most of the "big names" by calling the morning of. But the places favored by locals were often fully booked for the popular dining hours by the morning of... In May this would be even more the case.
