Restaurant Near Globe Theatre

Hi All:

My son and I are leaving for London next Tuesday. We have tickets to the Globe theatre on Thursday evening. I was wondering if there was a good restaurant close by. Thanks.

Robin

There is one good restaurant called Fish! at Cathedral Street. The food is especially good (fish and seafood mainly) and the architecture is quite unique. It is not far from Borough Market. Otherwise you have to walk toward Tower Bridge, there are four expensive but good restaurants, Butler's wharf Chop House, La Pont de Tour, Cantina del Ponte and Blue Print Cafe at Shad Thames(a pleasant area to stroll). You can dine outdoor at Chop House, La Pont and Cantina where you'll have a lovely view of Tower Bridge. If you need further details of these restaurants please feel free to email me. Welcome to London.

We ate at an historic pub about two blocks away from the Globe (towards Tower bridge). I think it was called the Anchor. I hope someone who knows it will give the proper name. It was excellent, the dining room overlooked the river, the service was delightfull, the price was not excessive. We had plenty of time to walk to the Globe for the evening performance.

Make that 'Le Pont de la Tour'. The restaurant where Tony Blair entertained Bill and Hil when they were in town a few years back.

A few suggestions: there are a couple of good restaurants in the OXO tower, a very pleasant 10 minute walk from the Globe along the riverside. The eighth floor restaurant is pricey, but the view is magical (there's a great cocktail bar and a viewing gallery up there too, should you feel like a pre or post dinner drink). The restaurant on the second floor has great views and food too, and the prices are more reasonable.

A little further upstream is Gabriel's Wharf, where you can find a few moderately priced restaurants: pizzerias and the like.

Are you going to the Globe on Friday or Saturday? How about having dinner in the restaurant of the Tate Modern? Friday and Saturday the museum is open until 10pm, and I believe the restaurant's last serving is at 9pm. It's on the top floor, with spectacular views over London. And the Globe is literally just next door. Book now if you want a table: people are flooding there in droves.

Final suggestion: The Globe has its own cafe, which serves light meals, pasta, etc...

Have fun.

Another suggestion:

I think Ann is correct, there is the Anchor pub really close to the Globe. Also, I believe the George Pub, which I believe is older, somewhere over in that neck of the woods.
Fodors

Food at the George is not very good, though the setting is excellent. Food at the Anchor, too, is overpriced. I'd choose the Founders Arms, just downstream of Blackfriars Bridge on the south bank -- that is, 300 yards upstream of the Globe.

The walk from beyond the Tower to the Globe is some thirty minutes. Beautiful, but long.

The Oxo Tower is expensive, even the brasserie.

Please write if I can help further, before Sunday, when I leave for a onth.

Welcome to London

Ben Haines

Robin - I would have recommended the Oxo Tower, although it is quite "corporate" and pricey. It occurred to me that the Tate Modern restaurant has had good reviews - see www.thisislondon.com - but I heard their were long queues there. If anyone has personal experience, I'd be interested to hear.
