restauants in Rome

Would appreciate any suggestions for excellent cuisine experiences in Rome in the Piazza Navona or Campo de' Fiori areas.

While frequented by many fellow tourists, we very much enjoyed Tre Scalini, right on the Piazza Navona. Be sure to order their tartufo for dessert.

Hi
I've been repeatedly recommending La Tartaruga, via del Monte della Farina 53, 06 686 9473, closed Mon. .
In Sept 01 I had dinner two nights in a row there--I've never done that anywhere before. It was a recommendation from the Fodors message board. The address is a small street that starts next to the church of St Andrea della Valle, immediately south of Corso Vittorio Emmanuelle, very near the area you are interested in. What a great little restaurant! It is family-run, and the same family owns a farm in Tuscany where they produce their own olive oil and wine vinegar. All the food was outstanding on both nights and as simple as it sounds, the mandarine (tangerine) sorbet was to die for. Cost for one, full meal plus a glass of wine and coffee, was about $40US and worth twice that.

I had one very casual dinner on Piazza Navona, at Ai Tre Tartufi, next door to the more famous I Tre Scalini. Ai Tre Tartufi had very good pizza. Pizza not like what I'm used to--this was dinner-plate sized for one person, very thin and crisp crust, toppings were generous but light, not too much mozzarella, not too much sauce. Their gelato may not be dubbed "the best", but it was plenty yummy as far as I was concerned.

Myosotis, via dela Vaccarella 3/5, phone 06 686 5554, credit cards, closed Sun www.myostotis.it was excellent. Simple décor, inviting pink color scheme. Complete dinner for one with a glass of wine, was about $35US last fall. If I'd had more time I would have gone there again. Pleasant and efficient service, very good food. A very good value imo. However, if you go to the Restaurant Rants and Raves section of this Fodors website (where you should take a look anyway for more Rome restaurants), the comments on Myosotis are mixed.
Pollarolla at the Piazza della Pollarolla--a small piazza near Campo dei Fiori on the way to the Piazza Farnese. A very "non-touristy" restaurants with excellent pasteries--try the St. Honore dessert.

We ate at Fortunata de Pantheon (someone on this site recommended it).

With your back to the front on the Pantheon walk straight ahead on the right side. just outside the square.

People were still coming in at 10:30 and it appeared to be mostly locals as many were dressed in suits (we were not and not out of place) and appeared to be dining after business meetings.

Excellent and not expensive (without wine).
We enjoyed Passetto, Via Zanardelli 14, just off the Piazza Navona.

Le Volte, actually nearer to the Pantheon than to Piazza Navona per se.
Trust Elaine -- we did a few weeks ago and went to Il Tartaruga and loved it. Great food, amazing service. Thanks Elaine!

About a 10 minute walk from Campo di Fiore is Carterrie er checco on via benedetta. Its a neighborhood hangout in Trastevere. The food is superb and they have a wonderful gelateria next door. Seafood is superb displayed on a huge ice bar and the meat dishes really shine as well.

another vote for La Carbonara. Great antipasta table. A meal in itself!

San Teodoro, outside especially. Fine seasonal food. Moderately expensive. Near the Forum.

We enjoyed Tre Scalni...the waiters were so friendly and we enjoyed them and the tartufo immensely.

We also really enjoyed dinner at ECCE BOMBA which is located in a side street off the Piazza Navona. It is a small family restaurant with friendly service which my husband's cousins took us to (they are born and bred Italians and both live in Rome). You must try the Roman artichokes. They are wonderful.
One of our favorites by Piazza Navona is Cul de Sac. It is a wine bar with "heavy appetizers." You can get a very nice meal there for not a lot of money. We ate there 3 times during our 6 day stay in Rome.

We absolutely loved Ditti Rambo off of Campo de Fiore. Tons of locals, and you do need a reservation. The cheese plate after dinner was the best I've ever had. I'm not particularly a cheese lover, and I still dream about it.

You must dine at l'Evangelista, via delle Zoccolette 11-a. The carciofi al mattone (artichoke flattened between bricks, then baked) is delicious. Their number: 06 68 75 810
