Renting an apartment in Paris

I was worried about noise and business too, but the apartment is actually not on blvd sebastopol, but instead, one set of windows opens onto saint-denis, which is a fascinating street to watch from the second floor -- lots of street life around there. It WAS noisy on Saturday night, but the two bedrooms are far away from those windows on St Denis. A person sleeping on the couch in the living room might hear some noise from St Denis, but the bedrooms are very quiet. Again, there are probably more quiet, peaceful locations, but this one has a lot of advantages.

sorry, I tried to split the link so it wouldn't make the post too long and mess up the board, but guess it didn't work.
Just type "passy" in the search box and click on France. The one I was referring to is the third one down entitled "Hotel Trocadero la Tour" dated 9/5/04

Scarlett you are getting some very good advice from the always helpful Fodorites. Just to bring up another name--we have rented apartments in France from www.francehomestyle.com
and are leaving in Feb to stay 10 days in one of their apartments in the 6th on Rue d'arbalete. There are three of us and none wanted to sleep on a pull out so this seems just right as it has 2 bedrooms. I was looking at the pictures on the web the other day and also noticed a washing machine in the bathroom. Yahoo! Francehomestyles is located in Seattle where I am which makes me more confident to use them. They have someone meet you at the apartment and go over all the details. We have used them to rent an apartment in Avignon a couple of times--right next to the Palace of the Popes--we loved that.
An aside to Margie--we rented a two bedroom 2 bathroom apartment with France Homestyles on Rue Mazarine that was a perfect fit for us--two couples wanting their own baths and the best location in Paris.

Hi Scarlett!
Just wondering what hotel in the Maris district your son decided on. We are also planning to stay in Marais when we're there. (Unfortunately the cool apartment we wanted to rent is taken for all of May 2005!) So we will go with a hotel this time...
Cheers,
Betty

My wife and I travel without the children, and since we like to spend at least a week wherever we go, we much prefer apartments.
One advantage, to me, is, since we sometimes nap in the afternoon, there is no daily maid service to interrupt the nap.
We also like to get up early and have our own breakfast (we like tea rather than coffee, for instance) and get out to sightsee before the crowds have gathered. We found a slight inconvenience in hotels that served breakfast, as they were not usually serving as early as we liked.
One downside to apartments is that many of them don't take credit cards, and one may have to jump through a lot of expensive hoops to get them the signed contract and the deposit, then visit all the neighborhood atms to get a pile of euro big enough to prepay the rent. Also, some want to return one's deposit on the day of departure, but aren't eager to get up early if one has an early flight.

Hi betty,
I think it is the Hotel du Marais, he had thought of going to the Jeanne D'Arc but we heard some bad things about the place (security issues). By the time I see him there, he might have changed hotels though. He is in Thailand now, then on to India. sigh.
We have gotten 5 emails back from vrbo, none of the apts we asked about are available..the Passy apt we decided to pass y on
and we are now looking in the 7th..still a few good ones to look at. Dear Fodorite dln has sent me a list of sites that have a LOT of apts so we are spoiled for choice so far.

Scarlett,
On my most recent trip to Paris (4/04) I rented an apartment. It was very small, (the kitchen was in an armoire!). But still so much larger than a hotel room, and less expensive. We thoroughly enjoyed our paris apartment. We rented through VRBO, the owner's website is www.rendezvousinparis.com. The apartment was located near the Louvre, it was a lovely and quiet neighborhood, there's a little restaraunt across the street (Michel's?) that was fabulous. It worked out so well that I am planning to rent an apartment on my trip to Rome (anyone have any suggestions?).
Have a good trip!
Debra

Yikes!
Today my email box was full of rejections from apt owners in Paris. Nothing is available!!
Sort of like those queries to the editors, nothing but rejections
So the Yankee has upped the rent, we will keep trying.
Thank you to everybody for suggestions and web sites, we are using them all!
We have indeed noticed that the prices for something in the Marais or Montmarte are better as some in the Montparnasse area also.
I am trying Montparnasse now.

Traveller,
We loved this apt. in the Centro Storico district. On Via Giulia: a quiet, central location (many of the buildings on this block were designed by Michaelangelo. Highly recommended.

Scarlett,
You will be pleased with any of the Paris perfect apts. We have spent every April & Oct. with them since 2002 and have arranged to continue through 2005. From your description(rue Cler) I am guessing you are staying in Pomerol. We have visited them all and the main difference is in the size...all have excellent appointments and Carolyn the on-site manager is very helpful. If you have any questions about the neighborhood please ask.

You might want to take a look at www.paris-sleeps.com. I rented a lovely little apartment - the one on the 5th floor of Rue des Ecoles Polytechnique. It was just perfect and dealing with Gail Burns was a joy. I highly recommend this apt. A great little restaurant just down the street too, name escapes me at the moment. A little side note about Passy - I just finished reading The World at Night and Red Gold by Alan Furst, about Paris in 1940 during the occupation and the main character lives in Passy, so lots of descriptions of the area.
