renting a car on Amalfi Coast

We are planning a honeymoon in Naples and the Amalfi coast. I've read here that driving is pretty anarchic in that part of Italy. On the other hand I love the independence of having a car and not having to wait for public transport. What do you think?

Diana,
the road along the Amalfi Coast is very windy and narrow with lots of traffic that sometimes has to stop and back up to let a bus or truck through. There are lots of blind corners. We caught the buses everywhere along that stretch and a few times I had to close my eyes as I thought we were headed over the cliff. The Italian drivers don't seem worried by it at all but it scared the hell out of me and some of the other bus passengers. Sometimes the road is so narrow, you need to flatten the outside mirror to get past other cars.
The buses are cheap and run fairly often. I haven't stayed in Naples but have seen traffic in the area and it was chaotic and crazy. I'd vote for the bus and train.
Kay

I second the advice not to drive. The road is very windy and the driver won't enjoy the drive so both of you will have a relaxing honeymoon. We had a driver take us to the towns we wanted to visit and found it very cost and time-effective.

Diana--do a text search on "rules for driving the amalfi coast" and you will find many opinions pro/con driving A. Coast. we loved it! the flexibility of going where/when you want makes the visit so much more enjoyable, and gives you the option of exploring the unanticipated opportunity for adventure. do not be intimidated by all the talk re. driving the coast; it just gives you such an adrenaline rush that it's hard not to be effusive, whatever your opinon!
whatever you decide, you will have a wonderful experience.
let me know if you can't find the rules, and i'll top them for you.
enjoy!

Was just in the Amalfi last month...loved having a car for those 8 days. I loved the freedom and ability to stop in the little villages along the road. Without a doubt...rent a car!

Best Wishes on your marriage!
Gigi

Diana--have been "off-line" for a few days, hence the delay in responding to your request. will top rules or cut/paste them for you from earlier posts.

diana, review your plans for staying in naples. there are so many better, safer places to stay. visit naples for the archeology museum to see everything from pompeii.

Hired a driver and car, because were told parking difficult, esp. Positano. We stopped where we wanted and were collected at agreed times by our driver. Less hassles and came to approx. US$80/day.
