renting a car in Avignon; GPS question

We're renting a car during our early February trip to Avignon. We've downloaded French maps into our Garmin nuvi, but I've got a quesiton.

When we use it here in the States, the Garmin plugs into the accessories outlet, like a cell phone does. This seems like a stupid question, but I can't find the answer and thought I'd try here. Does anyone know whether European cars have these same outlets, and if my Garmin plug will work? Or should I pick up a different plug before I go?

Our Garmin 370 worked well in our rental car in France in Oct.; no problem plugging it in.

Oh, definitely will have a map. I don't trust technology that much. But we thought it would be fun to take the GPS, too, since we have it.

Just a hint, based on my driving in Provence a few years ago - Arles and Ales, while they look similar on road signs etc, are in very different directions You should have better luck with the satnav than we did with our map...

We bought a European chip for our Navigon GPS and took it with us in October. It worked great and we drove from Perpignan to Paris.

Usual caution, though, ours found every little shortcut, including a dirt road near Roussillon that saved time and distance but had us worried for a while!

We were more adventurous, knowing the GPS would bring us home. This allowed us to drive to some tiny villages in Burgundy and Provence without being distracted looking at maps and road signs. Hope you have the same experience.

The electric sockets in automobiles are one of the few things in the world that seem to have adopted a universal standard.

We used ours in France in September and it worked wonderfully. It's a great help getting Out of a city!
