Renting a car for daytrip to Siena from Florence?
Has anyone done this? How easy is it? Website? How much for a day, is it possible to pick/dropoff from hotel? Any info would be excellent thanks. We've read about taking the bus and train...but would like to drive for a different experience.

Jo, your best bet is to make your arrangements even before leaving for Europe. We did a EuroRail Train/Drive package and it worked out beautifully. You will have to pick up your car in town. Once you get out of Firenze, driving is pretty easy.

See my other note on a thread about renting an Alpha 156 for size and fuel costs.

Jim

I think that renting a car for a daytrip from Florence to Siena is a waste of time and money. Siena needs at least a full day to visit, so why waste time picking up a car, getting lost trying to get out of Florence and then having to find a car park once you get to Siena. The bus service is excellent, cheap, very fast and run even three every hour.

We recently (April 2002) rented a car from Hertz, located near S.M. Novella train station. We made reservations through travel agent in Canada. Costed about 150$ for two days.
Avis and National also located nearby. Florence is a small city, so finding your way in/out of town is quite easy. Road signs for Siena (blue signs) are also very good. Hertz gave us a map with directions to get out of immediate neighboorhood. Drive from Florence to Siena on the Autostrada (they call it the "FiSi")is about 45 minutes and very scenic.
Drive via local road (S22)region also very nice. Once you get to Siena, directions to "Centro Storico" Parkings are excellent. Electronic signs indicate which parkings have space ("libero").
We got off at Siena Ouest Exit and followed directions for Duomo/Porta S. Marco parking. From there, 10 min. walk to Piazza del Campo. Very Nice! Enjoy!
We rented an Opel Corsa. It has a an "automatic" mode. Great if you do not like to drive a manual transmission.
