Renting a Car after a Cruise in Lisbon

We will be arriving into Lisbon via Cruise Ship and are planning to rent a car for six days touring Portugal.

We are offered the choice of airport, train station, train (and bus) station plus about six different locations downtown for pickup.

In terms of public transport or short taxi ride, can anyone suggest what is best.

Thanks. This travel site is an awesome find on the eve of our Med. cruise and drive.

Will you be staying in Lisbon for any length of time? If so you will want to pick up the car as you leave town. You neither need nor want a car while you're in Lisbon.

Therese,

We will only spend a couple of hours in Lisbon as we need to be in Porto that evening to drop one of our party by the airport for an early flight the next day.

The thing is, we'll have all our luggage.

We plan on returning to Lisbon after dropping our mom to sightsee.

Thanks.

Hi, Hopegal,
I think that the best location for car pick-up depends on where the boat docks. I know that some of them dock quite close to the Apolonia train station, in which case that might be the best pick-up. But if you have any information on that, it'd be easier to find the best place for you.

I would choose an in-town rental agency. Many cities have an extra fee for airport pick-up and sometimes train station pick-up. Such fees can be as high as an extra day's rental. Lisbon is somewhat of a pain, but the rental agency should be able to tell you how to best get out of town.

Word of Warning: Portuguese Drivers are very daring and fast. Get out of their way.

Word of Warning: Portuguese Drivers are very daring and fast. That was not my experience, but maybe I have a lead foot.

I have driven all over Europe and grew up in NYC and stand by my assessment; Portuguese drivers are very aggresive.
