Hi,
This might be a silly question, but how easy is it to rent a small boat for half a day or so in Hvar? There are 2 of us and we'd love to rent some sort of water craft and explore the surrounding area. Maybe take a picnic lunch with us? Being practical, we'd need a motor because sailing would probably be the end of us!
Any advice (where, how, cost, off the beaten track spots to visit, swim/snorkel places to explore) would be very much appreciated!!

I still have 3 months before I go, but a gal can dream...

In the Hvar harbor, there are small motor boats for rent (you'll see the signs, or ask at the tourist office). They are next to the daily excursion boats. I don't know the cost. If you feel comfortable going that far, there are coves all along the southern coast. Or you can take the boat over to the Pakleni islands.

As a part of our recent Croatian trip we visited Hvar. We rented a small motor boat from the harbor and spend a half of a day travelling between the small islands, swimming and sunbathing. The rental cost was from 350 to 450 Kunas (depending on the horsepower), which is $68 to $83. It was a lot of fun. You have to feel adventureous though. The waters are very calm in the bay but can be somewhat wavy as soon as you enter an open sea. The boats are very easy to operate. They'll teach you the basics and give you a small navigation map before giving you the boat. None of us (4 people) knew anything about it but we managed it without any seemingly big problems (docking was a little challenging but we learned). Anyway you'll have fun.
