rental insurance
What do you all do when you will be renting a car for 5 weeks in Britain? I just checked with MC Platinum & they cover CDW for only 15 days. Visa covers for 31 days but have noted in postings that Visa isn't as accepted for car rentals.

After reading recent posts regarding CDW and credit card insurance coverage, I have been thinking we may want to take the CDW coverage that is offered on the rental car. However, AutoEurope's insurance has a $1,000 deductible on collision and $1,255 deducible on theft. Is this standard? I was thinking that by taking the extra insurance, it would pay 100%. Also, would the credit card's insurance coverage pick up the deductible? (Citibank)

I don't ever recall a post mentioning that Visa was less usable than MC for a car rental, but even if there were one, it was nonsense.
To get around the 31-day maximum coverage period, I believe you have two choices: lease the car (probably a better deal anyway) or rent two cars - drop one off after 30 days and pick the next one up for the remainder of the trip. I'm not positive the two-car deal will work, but it's worth asking about, and maybe someone here will know.

I think the reference to MC being better may be because MC will cover insurance for car rentals in Ireland, whereas VISA doesn't. At least, I think that's so, but am not up on the latest.
I think the idea of returning the car and renting another is a good one for the 5 weeks to get coverage. I think that will work if you have a gap in the rentals, I'd make sure there is one day's gap as that criteria usually refers to 31 days consecutive coverage. If you just returned and re-rented a different car the same day, that may not matter. I"d check with them on that, also, but I think those limits are because they don't want to permanently be providing car insurance to people just renting cars longterm.
I'd doublecheck with the card issuer on that, as well as deductible, to make sure, of course.

There was a posting on 8.13.04 by DSR commenting that Hertz seemingly did not offer liability insurance in Scotland. That posting prompted some responses about credit card companies including VISA and their coverage policies. Perhaps that posting is one that people might have recently read about credit card coverage for car insurance.
