Rental Cars in Italy
I'm finding rental cars are very costly in Italy vs. other European countries. I believe the reason is that Italy requires full coverage on all car rentals.
In addition, I found that a rental car is $100 cheaper if I rent it in Orvieto and return it to FCO than rent/return at FCO.
What would be the cost/hassle of taking the train from FCO to Orvieto with wives & luggage (not that my wife will be a hassle, but her kitchen sink may)?
CDW is covered in Ireland by using a Platinum Mastercard. Is it the same for Italy? Can I refuse the CDW in Italy?
Bob, where can I get one of those Michelin # 563 maps?

You are doing your homework !
Do not try the CC thing in Italy--you may not be given the option.
The map can be bought at Amazon or Globe Corner Bookstore online at $8.95
Consider the two trains for 2 people--about $50 total and 2 hours more of your time. Bite the bullet, get the car, and stop in Civita enroute.

Bob,
Thanks, I think you are right -- I'll pick it up at FCO. I'm still looking for alternative companies & prices.
You mentioned to get a Michelin #563 map or better for Tuscany -- Which ones are better/greater detail? The #563 covers only a certain region. I'm sure I will be visiting Northern Italy sometime in the near future. If I'm going to make the investment, I'm going to want to do it right the first time.

There are 4 Michelin maps covering Italy. NW is 561--NE is 562--564 is south. But, 563 covers from Bologna to near Naples. If you want real detail in Tuscany--200k to 1--then the TCI map of Tuscany is fabulous. You can buy it in Italy or here, but the Michelins are fine for planning.

Hi Budman,
It will cost about 20E and take 1 1/2 hr to go from Rome FCO to Orvieto.
See www.trenitalia.com/en.
