Rent Car in Florence or Train to Montepulciano

We are going to be spending a few days in Florence before heading off to Montepulciano for a week. We don't need a car in Florence but do want one in Montepulciano to get around in Tuscany. We are staying in the Oltrarno area in Florence. It appears that we can rent a car there, but I'm wondering if it's crazy driving out of Florence in that area. It looks like we can avoid the main center of Florence, but just thought I'd ask. If it's a bit crazy we can always train to Chiusi - Chiancano and get a car there.

Thoughts?

I rented a car at Hertz Via Borgo Ognissanti several years ago and had not problem navigating to the highway. The car rental place can give you directions, or you can use google maps on your phone. If you download offline maps for the region before you travel to Italy you don't even need cell / data service to use google maps since smartphones have built in GPS which will pick up the satellite signal regardless.

The other alternative is to get a cab to the airport - max 10min ride, and pick up a rental car there.

Where were you thinking of returning the car? There can be a one-way rental surcharge if you don't return to the same place.

<<there are several car rentals near station.>>

The only one that is what most people would consider to be "near the station", as in an easy walk, is Hertz, and that is a few minutes' walk.

Find five rentals very close to the station at Chiusi - a few minutes walk to me is very near the station. See map at above site.

I've walked to the Europcar office, and also taken a taxi there. I've also had an office person drive me from the office to the station. It is a 20+ min walk - uphill.

Thanks for the replies. I think we may get the car in Florence. It would be quicker than the train, since we'd actually pass by where we're staying to get to the train station! I appreciate the feedback!

We have dropped off cars as well as picking them up on Borgo Ognisanti in Florence. No problems. Easier than mixing the trip with a train ride.

If you haven't set foot in Chiusi for god knows how long, Pal, don't bother replying. I have been in Chiusi often in recent years and I happen to KNOW that the only car rental place that could be called NEAR the station is Hertz, and that is a good 5-minute, at least, walk from the station. The others are NOT "near" by anyone's calculation.

Budget is a 3-minute walk; Avis is a 4-minute walk, according to google. The last time I picked up my Budget car there, I didn't time it, but it was at least very "near" by my calculation. But we travel with carry-ons.

3 rentals within 5-minute walk I'd call near the station yet St-Cirq claims they are far away. Moot argument anyway since OP will rent car in Florence.
