Return hire car to Florence Airport or Florence Downtown?

After 6 days car hire from Orvieto, just deciding where to drop it off in Florence. Concerned with traffic in Florence, and read something about cars in the city needing a permit? thinking it may be better to drop it off at the airport and I have read there is a shuttle bus into the city. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Are you going to fly out of Florence? We rented a car in Florence and returned it to the same location. We had a GOOD map to show how to get out of town and how to get back to the rental place. No problem. After we dropped off the car we walked around and found a hotel.

Thanks susnobie -We will be staying in Florence after dropping the car off so would have to get into the city anyway. Did you need a permit to drive in the city?

You do not need a permit to drop off rental cars at the downtown location - Borgo Ognissanti.

You can't drive in the central historic district, but that's all.

If you have GPS it's easy to navigate, otherwise make sure you have very precise directions from the rental car co.
