Ok, hopefully, this is getting close to my last question for my Germany itinerary. We're going to be going in July, driving from Rothenburg to Moselkern to hike to Burg Eltz then driving to someplace along the Rhine for a 2-night stay. The next day we'll take the St. Goar to Rudesheim or Boppard to Rudesheim (TBD) Rhine cruise and at minimum investigate the Rheinfels castle but perhaps other sites depending on time. And on the following day drive to Frankfurt in the morning for an 11AM flight.

Any suggestions as to what town we should stay in for the 2 nights?

I enjoyed my stay in St. Goar - a quaint town with some nice views - and Burg Rheinfels is right there. There are lots of places to stay in town, hotels and apartment rentals, many with nice views of the Rhine and surrounding hills.

I stayed at Ferienwohnung Geissler right on Heerstrasse in town. The accommodations were basic but most reasonably priced (30 - 35 euros a night). There are a lot of places like that in town, and Geissler was on the lower end of the price spectrum.

I know that Bacharach and Boppard are both popular places to stay as well, among others. I don't know them as well.

Assmannhausen has the HOTEL KRONE right on the river. You walk from the hotel to get on the Rhine tour boat. It is also an easy drive to Frankfurt airport when you leave.

Caution: Check up prior to your airport departure about bike races. This area seems to love them and they block the streets for the bikers. We almost got delayed one time and same thing happened to friends. No big deal if you know when the bikers are coming through.

Boppard was our choice. We liked the fact that there is a lovely promenade right along the Rhine. Lots of benches to watch the busy river traffic. One nice thing about Boppard is that the train tracks are behind the town; in many other places the tracks run between the river and town. We took cruise from Boppard down to Bacharach, then caught the train back. We could have continued to Rudesheim, but visited there by train on a different day as we were based in Boppard for a week.

you might want to check if any village has a wine festival when you are there. Or indeed any other festival

You're not spending much time on the Mosel, which we preferred to the Rhine. Maybe spend a night there.

Yes, the Rhine is a busy commercial river. The Mosel is slower and sleepier and lined with vineyards and cute little towns.

Yeah, if there's something I've learned about making this
itinerary is that there has to be a "Germany trip #2" and probably a "Germany trip #3" in the future. Too many things
we're not giving fair time to.

I stayed in Rudesheim. I'd also recommend St. Goar or Boppard.
