Ravello and Sorrento in September

Hello Fodorites. Flying in and out of Rome and have figured out how we will get back and forth yet but thinking we may train from Rome to Salerno on the first leg and going to Ravello and then on to Sorrento. We have about six nights to do in each and wondering if we should split them up three and three or do more in Sorrento? Also, looking for hotel recommendations in both. Thanks so much. Making up for lost time this year!

Love Ravello, but it is quite isolated: inland and uphill from the coast.
Will be a 1 1/2 hour bus ride from Salerno station & will require a decent amount of travel time to everywhere else on the Amalfi Coast (except for Amalfi/Atrani).
Even with your own car, it will take a while to get in/out of town & to the coastal highway.

If your goal is to relax & hangout, Ravello is a great spot.
As a base to see the rest of the Amalfi Coast, not so much. Positano/Amalfi would be my choice for that.

We prefer staying in Sorrento. It does require a commute to the AC as well, but has more transportation options, and more to offer for dining/nightlife.
Your trip is long enough to split time between at least 2 locations though & you'll get 2 totally different experiences!

As alandavid points out, where to stay and for how long depends on what your plans and priorities are. Do you want to see/do as much as possible or just relax and soak up the views.... Pompeii? Capri? Naples? Keep in mind that changing hotels will eat up some time. Even by taxi, getting from Ravello hotel to Sorrento hotel could take close to 2 hours.

If you plan to rely entirely on public transportation, you should study the timetables for buses and ferries.

What's your lodging budget?

Thank you. Goal is really just to relax. We are not planning to go anywhere else as we have been to the AC already and maybe will just take in a night or two in Naples on the way home. In terms of budget I would say between 300 and 400 if necessary. Many thanks.

I agree with alandavid above about having more travel options from Sorrento. Many years ago, we stayed at the Grand Vesuvio on a hill above Sorrento and thought it was perfect for relaxing. A swimming pool (not open in March), restaurant, bar, gardens, and a gorgeous view of the sea w Vesuvius in the distance to the right. There was a jitney on call for guests to downtown Sorrento and it was an easy walk to the train station. We took a ferry to Capri and I know ferries operate between some towns but you'd need to check schedules.

We were there in March and it took over an hour just to reach Amalfi city by bus! We never made to Ravello and were so sorry to miss its views. Maybe train to Salerno, hire a driver to Ravello for a couple of nights, then spend the rest in Sorrento. Again, see about ferries and drivers.

Thank you. We are currently holding a hotel in Sorrento for four nights and now looking for Ravello. The Sorrento hotel is fairly expensive so we are thinking of either a hotel or a nice B&B for Ravello for two nights. Any input on that appreciated.
