On two of my trips to Ireland I used bus and train transportation and the occasional taxi. From Dublin, one year I took a small group day trip to Glendalough, and another year went to Newgrange. For that, I recommend this tour http://www.newgrangetours.com/ - she guarantees entry to the tomb and is very knowledgeable on all the places you visit.

From Dublin, we took the train to Kilkenny and I know there is bus service to Cashel, but those might require an overnight stay to make the trip worthwhile -- I can't remember.

From Galway, I took a Connemara day trip, and a Cliffs of Moher/Burren tour. Both were great.

The tourist offices in Ireland have all of the information you need -- be sure to stop there. Getting to very remote areas is difficult/time consuming without a car, but there is plenty to see in the more accessible places.

I hope you and your daughter both have a wonderful time -- really, I'm certain you will!

Thank you very much, shashie! I'm still not sure how much time I'll be spending in Dublin. But both the tour to Glendalough and the one to Newgrange sound great. Thanks for the link!

Someone mentioned it earlier, but don't miss the Aran Islands. You can do the day trip from Galway. Go to Inishmore and see Dun Aengus Fort. Awesome.

Caph52-
The link that sashie gave you for the Newgrange tour is wonderful. Took the Mary Gibbons tour in Oct 2005.

The trip is wonderful and Mary entertains you with her amazing knowledge of Irish history as you drive through the countryside to the Hill of Tara and then onto Newgrange. She guarantees entry into Newgrange and never did we feel rushed.

As for the Dunguaire Castle Banquet in Kinvarra, when we were in Galway, there were tours heading in all directions but for the evening banquet they did not have a bus that went in the evening from Galway to the Banquet and back. Again, this was oct 05 and late season to boot, would be great if that has changed.
The TI in Galway was the best and everyone was so helpful while we were there- be sure and check with them.

Thanks, Naplo and Dawn. I'm definitely planning to go to Inishmore! Unfortunately, though, I won't be able to do the castle banquet in Kinvara. I decided to go in March and it won't be open yet. Thanks a lot for the link, Dawn.
