raileurope italy pass
Hello,
I bought a 3-day Italy pass in raileurope.com and planned to visit there on July.
I will stay 4 cities: Milan -> Venice -> Florence -> Rome
But I found that the train reservation fees are over 25 euro per journey. How come???I have spent about 200 euro for pass already.
Actually, can I get in the train without reservation? Thanks

Buying a rail pass for Italy is almost always a bad idea. If you asked earlier, you would have been told that.

Not on the high speed trains.

But you do not have to book the seat reservation through RailEurope, who charges a hefty premium to do so. Bring your pass to the ticket window in Italy at any rail station and purchase your seat reservations there to save money.

No, you can't get on the train without buying a seat reservation. Seat reservations are required for almost all trains in Italy (AV, ES, ESCity, ICPlus, IC). About the only train you don't need a seat reservation are the slow R trains. Had you bought your tickets in Italy from Trenitalia upon arrival they would have included your seats. The cost for 2nd cl including your seat would be Milan/Venice 30.50€, Venice/Florence 42€, Florence/Rome 44€ (total 116.50€). 1st cl on the same trains would have been 42.50€, 59€, 62€ (total 163.50€).
Buy your seats in Italy from Trenitalia. The cost will be 10€ per train.
The only train you can jump on without a seat is the R which would take 4:10 from Florence to Rome versus the fast train which takes 1:30.
