it looks like there are about two direct train rides to venice from vienna--one at around 3:30 PM and another at around 8:30 PM, both leaving from Wien Südbahnhof in Vienna.

this Austrian rail web site might help you:
http://www.oebb.at/vip8/pv/en/Servic...ries/index.jsp

you can look up the price once you choose your option. it looks like the service by EC train (3:30 PM) is the fastest, only 7 hrs (probably the most expensive too). EC is the best and obviously the fastest train operated in italy and it is nice. very clean and comfortable even for 2nd class. when purchasing the tickets, just mention that you want to sit together.

Hi g,

Train schedules, prices and tickets are at www.trenitalia.com.

It's 105E from Wien Suedbahnhof to Venezia San Lucia.

The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. Table 80 shows through trains, thus.
Vienna South 0630 to Venice Santa Lucia 1326, with restaurant car
Vienna South 1530 to Venice Santa Lucia 2232, with restaurant car
Vienna West 2034 to Venice Santa Lucia 0845, with 1, 2 and 3 berth sleepers and crowded 6 berth couchettes. I suggest you buy in Vienna a few rolls, butter, some cheese, and slices of sausage, and bulk out the tiny breakfast, chiefly coffee, that the attendant supplies sleeper travellers. First class has the singles and doubles, at about 150 euros a passenger. Second class has the triples, at about 100 euros, and the couchettes, at about 80 euros. I suggest your party take a triple, and that the most adventurous of you takes a berth in a 6-berth couchette. (You can ask whether there are 4-berth couchettes, but I think not). If you need advice on agents to serve you please ask me. The night journey lets you save a hotel bill, and travel time.
