Help booking train from Venice to Vienna

My friend and I are looking to book a day train from Venice to Vienna in May. I have been using http://www.seat61.com/Europe-train-t...#Italy-Austria for advice, but the trains I was finding were either super expensive or not available yet. Any help on where to look would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Your options for day travel:

Book bus from Venice to Villach and then train from Villach to Vienna. The Villach/Vienna leg would be booked on the Austrian train website www.oebb.at

Book a train from Venice to Innsbruck (change in Verona) on Trenitalia. Book the rest of the trip Innsbruck to Vienna on oebb. There is one train in the afternoon between Venice/Innsbruck that doesn't require a change. It departs Venice at 1:30 and doesn't arrive Innsbruck until 6:30 and cost is 55€. You would still need to get to Vienna which is 5 more hours away and costs about 60€.

Do you really want to spend an entire day on transport? Why not book the overnight train? A two person compartment would save the cost of a hotel room and not cost much more than the day tickets. Or you could book a 4 person couchette and get the Smart Fare discount of 58€ each, but you would be sharing with two other people.

FYI - From man in seat 61 about the night train booking:
*** Remember to select the type of couchette or sleeper you want, selecting '1st class' if you want a 2-bed or 1-bed sleeper. Oh, and 'Double seat compartment' actually means 2-bed sleeper!***

It's that bus trip that is the killer. It really slows things down.

www.bahn.de has fares in May from Venice to Salzburg (all train, no bus) for 49 Euro. You could visit Salzburg too, then go on to Vienna?
