Raglan Monmouth

Am travelling in March '08 to Europe for the 1st time. Will be in London and would like to take a day trip to Wales to see the Raglan Castle (ancestor castle). I have found a train from London Paddington to Newport Wales, which is south of Monmouth/Raglan. Does anyone have any suggestions how to get to Raglan from Newport? Are there trains, busses? How far is Raglan from Newport? It appears Tintern Abbey is really close, too.

You can check travel times (bus, train) in Wales at www.traveline-cymru.org.uk/.

The journey from Newport to Raglan Castle would appear to take about an hour, with a bus journey followed by a short walk from the road up to the castle.

Raglan Castle is attractive and well worth seeing.

The castle's website gives you the info you need

"How to get there by bus:
11km/7mls Monmouth, route No 60, Newport-Monmouth, 2-hourly Mon-Sun."

(most every historic site in Britain provides transport info in it's website)

So sorry I didn't follow-up as to how it went. It was great. Ending up renting a car at the Gatwich airport and drove (which was a totally crazy experience) to Wales. It was much cheaper for 3 to rent a car for a day trip and we got to see the beautiful coutryside. Being from the US, it was totally crazy driving in England/Wales...kept hugging the left, and the passenger kept having to yelp when I almost "took out" curbs, trees on the left! Boy perception is really tried when driving on the "wrong side of road on the wrong side fo the car!" The Raglan Castle was amazing. Stopped for lunch in a Welsh pub and it was fantastic. Unfortunately, it was a very rainy day, but well worth the day trip. Thanks to all for your help/advice!

This describes many days in Wales, but as he found, putting up with the weather is worth it.
