There is a ferry which leaves Naples at 9pm at night and gets to Milazzo at 12.25pm the next day. Taormina is then about an hour's drive away.
Alternatively you can fly from Naples to Catania (Via Rome) with Alitalia and this will take about 3 hours. From memory Taormina is then an hour or so away on the train.

JenniferP: Your best and least expensive option is to take the Intercity (IC) fast train from Naples Centrale to Taormina: either the "Peloritano" or the "Archimede".
From Capri, take a hydrofoil to Molo Beverello, then a taxi to Centrale. From Sorrento, take the Circumvesuviana commuter rail to Centrale (64 minutes travel time, departures every half hour).
Peloritano IC train lv. Naples 9:36
ar Taormina 16:02
Archimede IC train lv. Naples 13:42
ar Taormina 20:05
First class Euro 46.02
Second class Euro 32.95.
Optional Reservation fee Euro 3.00 (recommended due to length of trip)
The Archimede is a "restyled" Intercity train with an interior similar to the Eurostar Italia (no separate compartments).
The Peloritano is a "traditional" Intercity train with separate compartments with sliding glass doors, each seating six. First class has 9 compartments per railcar; second class has 11 compartments per railcar. Second class is more crowded, but there are fewer first class railcars.
You could also take an overnight sleeper train from Naples Centrale to Taormina.
Bear in mind that these trains divide in Messina, and only half proceed southbound to Taormina and beyond. You must be certain you are seated in a railcar actually destined for Taormina (best to verify onboard with train personnel).

My last paragraph in the posting above may be confusing: I meant to say that half of the RAILCARS proceed south to Taormina and beyond; the remainder proceed west to Palermo. In other words, roughly half the train is destined for Taormina and beyond, hence the importance of reserving a seat (both the Peloritano and the Archimede originate in Rome Termini). If you have reserved a seat, you are almost certainly seated in a correct railcar, but it is nevertheless a good idea to doublecheck with the train personnel on board.
