Quickest trip from Amalfi Coast to Sicily?

Hi fellow travelers!
Getting geared up for our trip to Italy/Sicily in September of this year! Can't wait. One thing I'm trying to nail down is the quickest way to get from the Amalfi Coast down to Sicily (Taormina). Would it be easiest to try to get back to Rome and fly down there? Or are we better off just hopping in a car and getting down to the ferry?

Any help you knowledgeable folks can provide would be much appreciated!

Ciao,
Darryl

I personally would just go back to Rome and fly there instead of the ferry situation.I do hope that you are seeing more of Sicily than just Taormina-beautiful but way too touristy!

Why go back to Rome? You could fly Naples to Catania on Alpi Eagles.

There are direct ferries from Napoli to Catania (www.tttlines.it) and from Salerno to Messina (www.carontetourist.it).
There are also trains from Salerno to Sicily - the trains cross the Staits of Messina by ferry so you don't need to change trains.

I flew to Catania from Napoli airport, picked up a rental a car and drove to Taormina, about 30 minutes from the Catania airport as I recall. There are also buses and trains from Catania, as well as taxi transfers.

If you fly to Sicily, reconfirm your seats and the flight time 24 hours before your departure. Your hotel can do that for you.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm going to look into flying from Naples down to Catania. My wife is 100% Sicilian so I'm trying to maximize the 3 1/2 days we're going to spend there!

I assume the difference between flying and taking a train/ferry has got to be at least 4-6 hours?

It's hard to compare without knowing where you are staying Amalfi and what time of year you are going.

There are websites like Via Michelin and Mappy that you allow to figure out driving times vs. train options or flight options.

I assume the train option would be going to Salerno to catch the train (or rent a car even -- chack into that). Then you have to calculate catching the ferry.

Calculating the flight time means including the time you would take to get to the airport and check-in.

And if you are going in high summer from the Amalfi, traffic can be thick.
