I do have a very little trip report--and it was quite some time ago--for the week that I was there: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...all-report.cfm
There's another thread that you might like; Malta't 100 Best list: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...s-100-best.cfm
I'm not sure, of course, about changes to some of the above, but of course the essentials remain the same. I love recalling that trip; it's just awash with golden light and deep blue water in my memories, although of course there was some rain!

You can definitely do it without a car. We ran into a number of people who were doing the trip using the bus, ferries, and cabs and they seemed quite happy with their choice.
We stayed in Valletta without the car and then picked it up to do the rest of our exploring. Car rentals are really cheap (they were under $100 for the week for a manual, about $125 for an automatic) and we only used about 3/4 of a tank of gas. For us, the flexibility made it worth having.
It was warm in late-Sept and early-Oct (I wore shorts except for out to dinner). Definitely warm enough to swim.

Thanks for all the great info. I'd love a North American opinion on driving in Malta. I've read so many discouraging things about driving there. Is it as bad as it's reputation? It will be our first time driving on the "wrong" side of the road ;P

I didn't have any problems. That said, I grew up driving in New Jersey, so I might be a bit biased... and I've driven on the 'wrong' side of the road in England, Ireland, Scotland, New Zealand and South Africa previously. My one concession is that I'll rent an automatic since driving a stick with my left hand seems a bit dubious.
On the roads between towns, it's quite easy. Some of the roads in some towns are quite narrow, winding, and crowded... but take your time and follow traffic and you'll be great. Distances are quite short between most places, so you won't do too much driving. Also, the ferries were very easy.
Don't rely on your GPS too much (we used google maps on our phones) as they don't have all of the one way streets tagged properly.
