Quick $$$ question re UK

I'm going to London first, then Edinburgh. Can I spend my English pounds in Scotland?

Yes, as part of Britain, Scotland also uses GBP.

However the reverse is at times questioned, and travelers are advised that it is better to get Bank of England bills than those issued by a Scottish bank. ATMs in Scotland tend to give Scottish bills, but the bank will exchange them to English bills with no questions asked.

Thanks, Michael. That won't be a problem for us but others seeking the same info will be glad to know that.

We came to London from Edinburgh with more Scottish pound notes than expected - probably @60 pounds. The neighborhood pub by our Gloucester Road hotel took them without a second glance.

You were lucky -- many won't.

Yes, we began our trip in Scotland and then into England. One English clerk turned his nose up at our Scottish pound notes but took them. No problem elsewhere in England.

Yes, you'll get funny looks from the ignorant in the UK, the big danger is when you get home and try to convert them.

Northern Irish banknotes are worse. And from what I've read, banknotes from the Channel Islands as well as Gibraltar are not accepted anywhere but banks. At least the coins are the same.

Don't know about the other notes but we have never had problem with Scottish notes being accept in GB over many years and several trips. Have even received Scottish notes as change in GB.
