Quick Crete Car Rental Question

I will be renting a car at Hertz at the Heraklion Airport.

The last day we plan to see Knossos in the morning and then head to the museum in the afternoon.

Should we just return the car to the airport and take a cab to our hotel and the museum? Or should we go through the effort/hassle of trying to return the car downtown. (We will be taking the ferry to Santorini early the next morning). How much would the taxi be to the hotel from the airport?

Thanx!

Hertz has two offices in heraklion
One at the airport, and the second in the Industrial Zone of Heraklion, which of course is outside the city....

A Taxi from the airport to Eleftherias Square ( centre of Heraklion) should cost 10 -15 Euros.

Thanx Clausar - so it probably doesn't matter between the two.

Wouldn't it be possible to drop the car off at the ferry terminal? We did that with our car, and it seemed that a lot of agencies make that arrangement.

We also ended our trip to Crete in Iraklion, stopping first in Knossos and and then driving to the ferry terminal to drop off the car. We went to the museum later that day.

Parking the car at the terminal was peculiar, to say the least, because all we did was leave it in an empty lot with the key under the mat and the door open, but we were told that this was what is done, and we never heard from the agency with any complaints! We did spend far too much time trying to FIND SOMEONE to confirm that we were doing the right thing, but after 2 hours, we gave up and left it at one of the parking lots at the terminal. But dropping the car at the ferry terminal made it a lot easier to coordinate the rest of our brief stay in the city.

Airport is of course better.....
As for keeping the car , it is possible to park the car near Eleftherias Square, depending on how early you will be there.
Personally i have always found space, in worst case i had to walk 5 min...... ( in the centre you have to pay for parking on the street)

The Museum is a few meters from the square, and to Knossos you can take the local bus.

Thanx -

I think we will see Knossos. Drop of the car and take a cab to the hotel to unload all the bags and then walk/cab to the museum and take a cab to the port the next day. Maybe they will suggest something else when we pick up the car....
Clausar - since you live in Athens. Do you or anyone you know have a recommendation for any unique women's clothing boutiques? I'm a bit of a shopper and I always like picking a few things up while we travel that are things we cant get here at home (no Gaps ).

Where will you be staying in Heraklion?
I could tell you if it's easy to drive to the hotel with the car to unload.
Hertz has only 2 points as pick up/drop off location in Heraklion, none of which is the port.
If you want, i can give them a call and ask if they would do it, and if a surcharge would apply.

Best shopping area in Athens is Kolonaki, and Kolonaki Square, 200 meters away from the Parliament and the Benaki Museum.
It's the posh heart of Athens, with many upscale boutiques and shops.

The Galaxy Hotel is not in the centre of the city, it is a 15 min walk to the Museum and Eletherias Square.
Parking there is difficult but not impossible.....

Well unless Hertz is willing to pick up there (or at the port) I don't see an advantage to having the car in the city.

OK, Hertz won't pick up the car at the port...
They could pick it up from the Galaxy Hotel at the extra cost of 14 Euro plus 23% VAT.
They said you when you will make the booking online, you should add the drop off place ( Galaxy, and the extra cost that i was given) in the remarks.
