Question on shopping

Do I really get a better deal in italy to shop for anything that's "made in italy" than in US? Especially on top designers clothing and accesseries? Which city has the best bargain on designer names? Rome, Florence, or Venice?

Sometimes....the best thing to do is to price the item(s) you're interested in here in the US before you go. We found that many times it would be cheaper to purchase items which are made in Italy back in the US. And remember, you only get the VAT refunded if you spend more than ITL 300,000. Not only that, but the companies refunding the VAT take a percentage for that service. Furthermore, if you take a cash refund at the airport, and take it in dollars, you'll loose even more with a poor exchange rate that they offer. Then there's Uncle Sam asking for some customs duty as you return....

All that said, we've certainly gotten some great buys over in Italy, and look forward to another shopping season this year. Shop carefully, buyer beware!

No question that wine is priced MUCH better in Italy than in the US. Plus you get the secret snob appeal (even if you don't make this known to anyone else) that the bottles you buy there won't have that "Imported by Snickelfritz Brothers, Raritan, New Jersey" on the back. I hate those!
Designer clothes and accessories?
Last year I stayed at Fattoria Pagnana (www.fattoria-pagnana.com) just 10 miles South East of Florence. To my surprise I learnt when there that it is very close to the factory outlets of Prada, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana. The prices are terrific - upto 50/60% off Italian Main Street prices. Selection was good too and not just last season's leftovers.
I understand that a new outlet will open closeby soon and will probably be selling Fendi and Celine.
Contact Fattoria Pagnana - they were very helpful.
Ian

When the dollar is strong against the lire, the savings from buying in Italy can be substantial...the cost of Ferragamo spectator pumps never seems to fluctuate too much at Saks! For specific items that are seldom discounted or put on sale in US, the bargains are there. As to VAT refunds, you can file your own forms and avoid paying any fees. PS: Lots of great silk items at unbelievable prices in Como in addition to good tips mentioned above.
