We'll be making our 4th trip to Rome in September and would like to hear about any sights and restaurants that are less discovered or more off-beat than the usual tourist destinations, especially some in Parioli and the Centro Storico.

Ambasciata d'Abruzzo qualifies as 'off the beaten track' and in Parioli. Excellent multi-course fixed-price meals ... overwhelming quantity. Price quite fair. Well known by other tourists so it has sort of beaten its own track. Located on via Pietro Tacchini - Peter Turkey Street. <BR> <BR>Ed

A little known museum that's a real gem is the Museo Nazionale Romano at the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme. It's near the Termini close to the Maggiore Basilica. Only open less than 18 months, I believe, it houses many beautiful antiquities, especially from the Augustian age--beautiful wall paintings, mosaics and statuary--highlighted by the wall paintings from Livia's dining room (a real treasure). We happened upon it by chance one rainy afternoon in November 1999, not too long after it opened.

try to see all those magnificent monuments realy late at night, after midnight on a skooter, it will give you the feeling of a real roman movie star, just wondering for the dolce vita. get up late in the morning, eat brunch aand go shopping in trastevere, and if you are rely into making it different find a communist night club and smoke.

Go see San Clemente Church near the Colosseum. No charge, but a contribution would be a good idea. <BR>First thing you notice is the area in front of the church -- a secluded area with a fountain -- this area is called a Paradisio, and must have seemed like paradise to tired hot tourists. <BR>Then enter the church and go straight to the bottom level. You will see an early Roman building of unknow use, a temple of Mithras, and the early 4th century church with some fascinating frescos (one saying SOB in Latin). This church had its top bit cut off and the rooms infilled and the 12th century church was built on top. <BR>See http://www.underome.com/sub/clement2.html
