Hello Patrick.

I've read some of your positive posts about LeRegent and their superior deluxe rooms. While they might otherwise be out of my price range, they are offering rooms for 40% off due to an elevator renovation.

Aside from the obvious -- having to walk up steps and possible noise -- do you think it will impact a stay there? Any specific info you can provide, as well as your opinion, will be much appreciated.

Hi - I stayed at Le Regent in November 2002 - the only other thing I can think of is perhaps you won't be able to have breakfast in your room - they offer the choice of room service or the breakfast room and they might not be prepared to carry the trays up the stairs.

It's a lovely hotel and 40% off is a great deal so if you don't mind walking up stairs or some noise, as you say, I don't think you can beat it!

We have stayed at Le Regent several times. We are active and energetic, and often skipped the elevator and just walked up, because the elevator was so slow (like many elevators in European hotels). So I wouldn't view the lack of elevator as a problem.

We also never eat breakfast there, choosing instead to walk directly across the street and have a people-watching Parisian breakfast of cafe creme and croissants.

I'm trying to remember exactly how many floors there are -- five or six, maybe? The top floor starts being a bit of a climb, but we walked to our room many times, and we nearly always walked down as it was quicker that waiting for the elevator.
We've stayed there several times and never ate breakfast there. I'd much rather go to one of the places within a block and have breakfast, so that is no issue at all. For 40% on a superior room, I'd grab it in a heartbeat (but then I live in a three story townhouse without elevator myself. How you feel about it might be a different matter.

Iregeo, I think the difference in rooms is the size. The superior deluxe are a bit larger. I'm pretty sure thats what I had when I stayed there in 2003. it still wasn't exactly a larger room.

its a really nice hotel. 40% off seems like a great deal.

Hmmm. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought they only had two categories. I called them standard and superior. The superior rooms were all on the street side and each one has two windows, plus is a larger room with a larger, nicer bath. Maybe they no longer call anything "standard" but have renamed those deluxe?

While I admit the superior rooms aren't huge, they were very well laid out, and unlike many Paris rooms I've had you could easily get all the way around three sides of the bed, you could put all your clothes into drawers and/or closet and the room was quite bright.

Nope. I see looking at their website, there are now three categories of rooms. The standard ones are quite a bit less. I have no idea what the difference between the deluxe and superior deluxe is -- but probably not much as there is very little difference in price between those two categories.

When all else fails, ask. . .

Last night after posting, I emailed LeRegent and asked the difference between the rooms. In their usual form, I had already received an email answer from them this morning.
A standard room is 11 square meters.
A Deluxe room is 20 square meters.
A Superior Deluxe room is 23 square meters and also has an extra window.

Now I'm confused if we had a Deluxe or a Superior Deluxe each time? I suspect it was the latter as we always had two windows. I'm not sure that any would have 3 windows.

Patrick, I got the same answer: 20 sq. meters v. 23 sq. meters. They assure me that the "luxury" (their word)is the same, though!

I did book it for 120 euros (200, less 40% for elevator renovations). I don't care if I get the 20 or 23 sq. meter room, since I will be alone. I did request one bed (140 cm), rather than 2 80cm beds, and a desirable view.

I'm seeking your opinions on one more matter concerning this booking.

I did book a room about 2 weeks ago based on the information mentioned above. Now, the website no longer mentions elevator renovations, nor is the 40% discount mentioned. In fact, it now lists summer rates at a discount, but far less than the 40% discount I booked.

I do have a written confirmation. However, in our exchange of e-mails while booking, they indicated the price of the room at 200 euros, less 40% for elevator renovations. I replied, with credit card info, requesting a room at the 120 euro rate (200 less 40%) and they confirmed, writing in BOLD PRINT that the rate is "200 euros -40%", rather than confirming the actual amount of 120 euros. This struck me as odd, but no big deal, until I now see that the promotion seems to be gone.

I have e-mailed the hotel asking if they still plan on doing the elevator renovations, but they haven't replied in about 5 days.

I am a bit concerned, but know that this is a reputable property. What do you think? Would you do something to further confirm or just let it go? Thanks.

I have no comment about the rate, but do have some information about the rooms. Because we have stayed there three times, booking two rooms each time, we know thre are at least three room variations.

The ones streetside are a nice size for Paris.

There's a smaller size where moving around the room becomes a bit problematic, and then there's the teeny tiny room I had when we first visited.

All, though, were beautiful, and the baths are good, even the teeny one.

We think their delivered breakfast is excellent.

I have noticed the Regent typically having summer discounts, like many other Parisian hotels (I think they are usually around 25 pct).

Why are you concerned that they wrote the confirmation as "200 euro minus 40 pct" rather than as "120 euro"? It's the same thing mathematically, so as long as it is fully specified, I don't understand why you are bothered by that.

Christina, I was bothered because: (1) it appeared that the hotel used bold writing to stress a point; (2) the discount no longer appeared on their website; (3) they did not reply to my e-mail inquiry; and (4) I am not familiar with the hotel. It is now a moot point, however, because I phoned the hotel. They did inform me that they no longer intend to do elevator renovations during the time of my stay, but will honor the 40% discount rate at which I am booked.

Guess I am really lucky -- 40% off my hotel and a VERY cheap airfare. Now, if only time would pass more quickly...
