My bestfriend called today and ask me to help her find out some information for her college son who is going to Nice for a month in June. She is a single mom so he will be on a budget, what do you think it will cost daily for food and train travel around Nice. What are some sites and day trips he could do. Are there any areas that he should be alert in. He has a place to stay so there will be no need for hotel. Many thanks

A bus ticket is 1.30 euros ( less if you by 10 or a pass)and it takes you around Nice an to most nearby towns. The Tourist office is very helpful with advice on what to do and see.
They gave us a bus rout map that was very useful.
Don't know about trains.
If one buys food at the market, makes sandwiches , has a slice of pizza etc , the cost is not much more than at home.
Nice is a tourist town so eating and drinking out ( in the center) can add up.

You could check out some guidebooks from the library. That's what I do for preliminary research, without having to spend any cash up front. The internet is great for smoothing out details, but I like guidebooks at the start when you are beginning planning from scratch.

If your friend's son is doing the trip I would mail him a list of a couple of web sites and suggest he head for a bookstore.

There won;t be anyone holding his hand there - so he'd better get himself organized now.

Trains run frequently along the coast and the fares are cheap. Buses do the same and also serve nearby hilltop villages. Various kinds of bus passes are also available.

For a college student I would recommend buying a copy of the Lonely Planet Provence & the Cote d'Azur guidebook. It will be full of ideas on where to go and how to get there cheaply.
