When I was in Europe this summer I generally wore black casual sport shoes (Fila brand) with the no-sock look (no, no pom poms at the back just low cut socks that don't show).

I wore these with shorts, skirts or whatever and boy, did I get funny looks from the Europeans!!

Can't help that though; my feet won't allow me to wear anything but sports shoes if I want to walk more than to the restaurant and back.

In the UK, if you have to wear sports shoes, I'd suggest trousers rather than skirts/dresses. With the sporty look - (shorts or jeans), any colour sports shoes is fine. With smarter trousers, it's best to have a toning sports shoes - e.g. pale shoes with pale trousers, dark shoes with dark trousers.

ok... i dont normally grumble on this forum..i just enjoy reading it and helping out when i can. but.....here it is!
i dont know about the rest of europe since england is my destination of choice, that said.. i have never felt strange or uncomfortable by anything i have worn over there... and i am a jeans and tennis shoe person by nature..white cotton socks included! i have found that the differences between the cultures are mostly viewed as endearing..not sneered at. it will be obvious that you are american the instant you open your mouth, regardless of what you are wearing.... nothing to be ashamed of there!!
the bottom line is to dress appropriately for the occasion.... and more importantly...be polite!!!!!

thanks for letting me ramble on!!
White socks in sandals is a No everywhere I think? As long as you don't go there you'll be fine. I never mind people's socks, tbh.

Funny, this old thread. White socks in sandals are still a no no, but sneakers with shorts or skirts are common now. Still better with socks that don't show, though.

Where are the days when we worried about what to wear when traveling...

"White socks in sandals are still a no no."

That would be everywhere in the world!

For this style the socks are mandatory.

In my local (Belgian) paper today, an article encouraging people to visit Brugge again, now that you don't have to share your selfies with Americans with bumbags and white socks

Socks and sandals have been perfectly accepted attire in the PNW for decades. Grew up here, and this has been totally normal. One of our quirks, I guess

Lord help us if we have come to the point where we have to look to Justin B. for fashion trends.
