Question about Plitvice Lakes new online ticket system

I just read about the new on line ticket buying system but am a little confused. One place it says you can now ONLY get in with advance purchased tickets, another place seems to indicate this is just an option.

Also, I had read that the best 'plan' was to arrive late one day and spend a few hours (after most of the day trippers left) and then plan to go back in first thing the following morning. And that the hotels could validate your ticket or something so you didn't have to pay again. How does this work with the new online system? You used to be able to buy a one day or a two day (48 hour) ticket, now on the on-line buying site it looks like adults can only buy a two day ticket (while children and students can get a one day or two day - does't that seem pretty strange?)

At first it sounds like a good idea, but then I see you have to enter during the hour time slot you reserved. We'll be coming from a distance (as I assume most people will) - if you get stuck in traffic or it takes longer than you think and you miss your time slot you're screwed? Given that the tickets are over $50 a piece that seems like a bad idea.
