Question about Half Fare Cards

Hi,

If a group of 6 of us are traveling to Zermatt by train, do we need 6 half fare cards to purchase the transfer ticket at half the cost, or can one person with a half fare card purchase all six?

Also, can you purchase the tickets using the half fare card online? Or do I need to order the card, then purchase tickets at the kiosk in the train station.

Thanks,

F

If your group has kids, then the Swiss Travel pass will cover them. But if you're all adults then you'll each need separate half-fare cards.

Yes, you can buy the pass on-line. The Rick Steves site sells them via Rail Europe.

What do you mean with "transfer ticket"? What's your itinerary, where will you enter and where will you leave Switzerland?

Maybe this will help:

The Swiss Transfer Ticket gets you from the airport or border railway station directly to your destination. And back again.

Children under the age of 16 travel free of charge when accompanied by at least one parent holding a Swiss Family Card.

The Swiss Half Fare Card Combi is available as an additional card when you buy a Swiss Travel Pass Flex or a Swiss Transfer Ticket.

It costs CHF 60 and offers the same services as the Swiss Half Fare Card. You can purchase it at all Swiss Travel System points of sale in your own country or online from SwissTravelSystem.com

In my experience, all adults need their own pass/card and all children also need a pass/card (but theirs will be either cheap or free). Even the kids needed to show their pass/card to the conductor (presumably at least in part to demonstrate that their age has been verified by an SBB official). Might have changed since we last travelled.

I would buy from sbb.ch/en or Swiss Travel System but no need to purchase before you arrive unless you plan to enter Switzerland in a place where there is nowhere to purchase one.
