Question about ferry travel in Croatia

We will be in Croatia in July. We plan to take a ferry from Dubrovnik to Korcula and from Korcula to Split (and maybe stop in Hvar). I've searched the various websites and can see some schedules that will work for us but can't see how you can book them in advance. Is this only necessary if you are taking a car? For just two foot passengers do you need to book in advance? These trips need to be on specific days (we have the hotels all booked) so don't want to find ourselves in a situation where the ferry we want is sold out. Does that ever happen (for passengers with no car)? Thanks

You don't need to book the ferries in advance; just show up and buy a ticket at the kiosk. These are huge ferries, I cannot imagine them getting sold out. Worse case if you show up late you would have to stand or sit on the ground. Not sure about the hydrofoils, though.

I think it's very unlikely that you won't be able to get a ticket. I just turned up and got one from Dubrovnik to Split on the day. What I had hoped to do was stop in Korkula but discovered that if I got off, there would be no further ferry for 4 days! Just beware.

I think www.jadrolinija.hr has online booking, but I have never used it so I'm not sure. Without a car it is not a problem just to buy your tickets once you're there. Just to be safe, you might want to buy your next ferry ticket as soon as you arrive rather than leaving it to the day of your departure.

I used Jadrolinja quite extensively last summer. They can't book out - there is no such concept. The tickets are sold until all people are on board. For car drivers, it can happen that the ferry is loaded to capacity and you have to wait for the next ferry an hour or two later, although I have seen them making extra runs (outside of the schedule) when the traffic backed up. But basically it is like trying to buy a subway ticket online - sometimes possible but always a bother without any benefits.
