Andò = 3rd person singular preterite past tense.
Vada = subjunctive (singular)
P.S. Tedgale, I studied Italian even longer ago than you (1965-1967), so I've had a lot to UNlearn in order not to sound like Rip Van Winkle when I travel. I managed to unlearn the egli/ella so it rarely slips in (though using lui/lei as he/she sounded so weird to me at first) and I stopped worrying about using the preterite past in conversation, but that "loro" was so burned into my brain as proper that it's hard to drop it.

andare is an irregular verb, the defintive form is: andare,
I go = Io (but you can omit it) VADO
you go = Tu VAI
he/she goes = Egli/ella (but the colloquial form is Lui/Lei) VA
we go = noi ANDIAMO
you go = voi ANDATE
they go = essi (or the colloquial form loro) VANNO
ANDO A ROMA is a very big mistake, you must say VADO A ROMA,
