For last minute, the best deals are usually a consolidator (or travel agent who works with one, as many can't be booked direct by consumers), or those last-minute efare sales.
Here are three web-based consolidators you can try:
www.airlineconsolidator.com
www.airgorilla.com
www.1800flyeurope.com
I just read a good article on consolidators and it said there aren't nearly the good deals there used to be to Europe, that market just isn't available at deep discounts much anymore.
I checked those few sites, and the fares weren't amazing, but about what you'd have paid for summer fares buying in advance, which is still good (around $750-800 with taxes).
The best deal with on 1800flyeurope on Continental for only $696 including all taxes (which was $500 base fare pretaxes). The others were around $750+. I just used 8/31 and 9/7 for sample dates, and I think $696 for nonstop JFK/LHR RT is pretty good. That was Continental, I imagine, as it was EWR, but Continental themselves quoted $1310+ for that flight.
