Puglia in September: Where?

I would prefer a beachfront location which is also fairly convenient to rail connections as I would prefer not to rent a car. Timeframe is September 2026. Thanks for any recs

I’d first settle on a part of Puglia—northern, central, southern—and make a list of things you want to see from your base. You can’t see everything from one base, so narrowing it down first helps.

Gallipoli, Train:tick, Beach front:tick, Gay friendly:tick

Otranto and Torre d'Orso are also pretty good.

I love Lecce

Brindisi and Bari both have airports, train stations and long distance bus stations

https://www.fondazionepetruzzelli.it/en/ in Bari might interest

August is stupidly hot, while October is a bit drafty. Finding the perfect September dates is tricky

Some hotels do deals with other habitations, so you can find a hotel with its own yacht, or a farm house which allows for easy two centre holidays. For example https://www.agriturismo.it/ offer masseria (fortified farms) which while out of town make for a nice two or three night break

My favorites were Lecce and Bari, both along train lines.

Hi, I am trying to put together a new trip to Italy & visit Lecce and also Bari, as I have not visited those Italian cities yet & am curious. What were your favorite sights & restaurants, cafes in those cities? I read your posts often & enjoy how you travel & your opinions.

Welcome to Fodors. You've tagged your question on to someone else's topic. It would be better if you started a new thread of your own,

You might want to take a look at Galatina, too. Check if there are good transport connections...

Would you consider renting a car for a few days so you could have the experience of staying in a rural masseria? Driving is extremely easy outside the larger towns.

Galatina is very charming and relaxing, but doesn't Dukey want to be on the beach? My favorite spots in Puglia are all inland, but Monopoli might work, at least in terms of rail connections. What sort of beach are you seeking? There are lidos very near to Monopoli, walkable/cyclable for me from the center but definitely not "open your door to a sandy beach" in the center of town.

I leaned heavily on the advice of The Puglia Guys who write the Big Gay Puglia Guide for my trip. I found their advice about beaches, restaurants, where to base, etc., very helpful.

Agree that a car (or a private driver) for a few days would make things easier if sightseeing is a priority.

This is the closest Monopoli town beach that I recall. There are some rockier areas right in outside the center where people swam as well.

Oh geesh, I just realized that I meant to say Trani, not Bari. (No criticism of Bari intended -- I didn't visit it.) I should have said: My favorites were Lecce and Trani, both of which are on a train line.

I was just thinking of one place inland, and maybe go to the Ionian coast from Galatina if he rents a car (??)
Just food for thought....

And if not to Galatia, maybe a night or two at an inland masseria so he could get the rural feel..but only with a car, and only if the place is convenient enough to drive on a day trip or two.

Honestly, there is such a world of places to explore in that region...

Even Vieste would make a wonderful base for beaches and strolling around....but he'd need a car or to hire a driver both ways.
I think I might be confusing the issue here...I'll keep reading and see how the plans shapes up..

Your ideas and insights are always helpful. In my post I was just trying to stick to the "by the beach" brief! But was probably confusing nonetheless...

Hi Dukey,
Lots of great advice above. I'll simply add our now-eight year old TR below (no fotos yet). I'm confident that some of it will prove helpful, if even in a limited way.

Joannyc:

The photos are so beautiful and you had such great weather!!
Would you let us know if you spent any time in Taranto (I saw it named on the map but did not see any photos so I imagine you did not go there on this trip...)?

Thanks very much, ekscrunchy! Yes, the weather was great while I was there. And, yes, I did go to Taranto, I spent 3 nights there. The pics start after Gallipoli. The first pic is the Cathedral.
