A taxi driver told me that this is the best place in Edinburgh to find a taxi because all the drivers use this loo!

Hello again ozrick, unfortantly by the time we got home (two months later) I discovered we had lost the business card for this shop and the beautiful father and daughter. But I will never forget them. And of course Milan in the 1970's was quite different than it is now.
By the way, my father was raised in your Australia (born in Wellington, NZ).

Finding toilets is often a challenge when traveling. But my recent trips have taught me to always carry some toilet paper in my purse as in many countries, there will be none at all.
Also carry a small washcloth/or some napkins or paper towels because after you wash your hands, there will be no paper to dry them.
And often there will be no water to wash hands either, thus always have a bottle of hand sanitizer.
In addition, lots of change beacause there is no set fee, it could be anything and sometimes you are expected to tip the attendant also. Thus, good to be prepared!

Actually I don't think the ladies loos at the foot of the Mound in Edinburgh are still there, since they built the new Weston Link as part of the National Gallery complex. But there are of course loos in there

I assume then that Europeans don't suffer from prostate or descending bladders as they reach middle age? When I was a sprightly young fellow I could go all day without a pitstop, even after downing litres of Coke. FWIW old age sucks!

This is an issue of great importance to me. ;-)
FYI, there's a public restroom just inside the entrance to the Roman Forum off of Via dei Fori Imperiali. You go in the gate and turn left just after the little information booth. Tucked in a corner behind the booth are two restrooms, with real toilets and running water and everything. There's even a chunk of Roman column for you to sit on outside while you wait. I'm sure they don't advertise their existence because the lines would be a mile long. On the bright side, since no one knows about them, they are relatively clean. I have used this restroom on all three of my visits to Rome!

One thing I observed on my trip to London and Scotland last year was that, to the best of my recollection, every attraction that was on the Great Britain Heritage Pass had good restroom facilities. In fact, some of them were quite outstanding, which surprised me a little bit given that my last prior experience with British public restrooms had been dealing with the awful men's facilities at Gatwick while changing flights. But places like the Tower of London and Hampton Court had absolutely spotless facilities--and that's saying something for a men's room.

I've purchased more small pastries in Italy and France than any reasonable person should have in their lifetime, all to use the loo, but so worth it! When you gotta go, what's a couple centesimi?? LOL

There are restrooms to be found, free of charge, in places such as department stores, restaurants, etc. Use them as you visit these places for lunch, shopping, museum visits, etc. As others have said, take advantage of each opportunity.
We only paid once in 17 days- at the Termini train station in Rome. It was disgustingly filthy.
You should, however, tip the attendant, if there is one and she is doing a nice job.
Also, in Rome, by the Colliseum, around back, there is a WONDERFULLY, SHOCKINGLY clean toilet, running water, etc. It didn't even smell (it was outdoors).
