audere_es_facere, what was it you were saying just yesterday about "TSA = yank scaremongering nonsense...."
You might want to rethink that after the overnight revelations of recent terrorist plannings. Without organizations like the TSA and equivalent in UK, we'd all be at greater risk for our safety.
And if "travelling to the US is such a pain in" your "arse"...

I wouldn't change a single word. What is happening in the UK is exactly how most countries would go about this. React when there is a clear threat and react appropriately and proportionately.
As opposed to the Orwellian "Department of Homeland security" who are at some super level of alert all the time.
And yes travelling to the USA is a real pain in the arse which is why I go to France for my holibobs.
You are aware that "Team America - World Police" isn't a documentary?

I agree - smart idea Suzie. I always copy my flight/hotel reservation etc. into my calendar & synch them into my PDA but emailing myself on gmail is a great backup.
I have found having the electronic copy in my Palm very useful when hotels tell me breakfast isn't included etc.
I always take an inflatable coathanger and the twisted elastic clothesline with hooks. Shirts dry very quickly with the coathanger and they need minimal ironing.

packed,
I have the little notebook also with the little colored tabs for each city.
It is easy to find the address to a restaurant that I want to go to. It takes a bit to get it all together as I plan my trips over a year or 2 but once all the info is in that one notebook, it is a breeze.
I also have all needed travel info including flight, hotel, & transportation.
Keeping copies online is a good thing.
My sister will carry copies of my important travel documents and I will carry hers.

If you and your spouse are checking different suitcases, be sure to pack one of your outfits in his bag, and one of his in yours.
If one of the bags doesn't arrive, at least everybody will have a day's clean clothes.

for mileaday- Actually rarely have I been caught in a rainstorm, if that happens I would:
1) get wet
2) go into a local cafe and drink wine until it stops
3) if staying with friends ask to borrow a windbreaker
4) in major cities buy an umbrella from the vendors that come out and sell real cheap ones
If you pack for every conceivable situation, it is impossible to truly pack light. I'd rather take my chances, with this kind of thing, than pack like a nervous nelly.

suze, I KNOW you're crazy...about Switzerland that is!
FWIW, I didn't even know my cell phone # until recently and only have an iPOD because I kept stealing my husband's on trips. I'm not a luddite by any means but usually a couple of books would see me through a flight--I never sleep on the plane.
Now I find my iPOD indispensible in check-in lines when everyone is complaining. It's also fun to have music in the apartments we rent. Ok, enough of the commercial for Apple.
