Provence without car. Base in Sault or not

I have a last minute time off starting July 20th and was thinking of heading to Sault, Provence for 5 or 7 days. Travelling alone, no car, want to walk. Lavender fields have been on my bucket list for years. I have been to Provence at least 10 times before in May or September with a car. Will I be bored in Sault? I picked Sault based on possibility of daily walks starting from Sault. Is there a better option? I plan to take public buses from Avignon. Thank you in advance.

Well, for one thing, late July is nearly the end of the lavender season, so you will probably have to go to more inaccessible higher altitudes to see it.

You'll probably miss the lavender going at that late date. It was already in bloom a few weeks ago.

Agree with the previous posters. We were in Provence, including Sault, two weeks ago and the lavender seemed in peak bloom, though the sunflowers were just beginning to smile.

We were in Sault 2 weeks ago and have visited it (and the lavender fields) many, many, many times. Sault is not a good place to stay if you do not have a car. It is a perched village and in every directions it is downhill. E-mail me at [email protected] to get my new/revised itinerary for Provence. I added a lot of info abut lavender fields - but as others have stated - they may have been harvested by the time you get there (we've never visited Provence past mid-July to Sept). However, I think the Lavandin planted in the Valensole plateau and in the Luberon may bloom earlier than the Lavendre around Sault and the higher elevations near Sault. Stay elsewhere, rent a car or find a small tour, visit Sault & nearby around Ferrassieres & see what's there.

My last point was that I think the "true" lavandre (around Sault) blooms later than Lavandin. The last week in June the Lavendin was at peak bloom - but not so the Lavendre around Sault - there was still some green.

Thanks to all for prompt reply. Maybe I will try again earlier next year. Back to googling for trip ideas for next week.
