Provence: where to stay/which hotel

Hello
I'm heading to Provence mid-October-- still have not booked rooms. I'm looking for some help on logistics. I am flying into Marsaillles on Sat 10/7 (not interested in spending time there)I have one week in the area. I plan to spend at least 2 nights in St. Remy and the last 2 or 3 nights in Nice. We don't mind moving around and staying at different hotels or B&Bs. It is our first time there and we like to experience different places. we will have a car.

What would be a good town to stay at between St. Remy and Nice? Are there any other towns near St. Remy worth staying in? Also, is staying in Nice a good central spot to for visiting surrounding places in this area?

thanks I am having some trouble mapping this out.

Nice is excellent for touring the Côte d'Azur, but finding a good hotel between St-Rémy and Nice is not so easy if you want to take a direct route. If, however, you'd like to take the coastal route out of Marseille, you could spend the night in Borme-les-Mimosas, just above the beach of Le Lavandou. We stayed there at Le Mirage, a pleasant hotel just outside the village.

Another possibility would be staying in Gémenos, near Aubagne, at the lovely Relais de la Magdeleine. That's a very special hotel, with pretty rooms and a fine restaurant.

Near St Remy, I like Fontveille and stay at the Regalido. And between St Remy and Nice, I like Moustiers Ste-Marie and have stayed at the Bastide de Moustiers owned by Alain Ducasse. This village is known for it's pottery, many ateliers. In St Remy, I enjoyed L'Hotel, smack in the middle of town www.hotelphoto.com

Last christmas we also flew in and out of Marsailles and stayed in Aix. From there we took mostly day trips before going to Nice. In Aix we stayed at a 14th century convent that was turned into a hotel. I can get the name if you wish. The rooms were nice and had a very small kitchen. In Nice we stayed at the Hotel Albert. It was OK but not very special. But it was inexpensive. It was very convienient and near the water. It was also very easy to get in and out of town with a car.

With only 7/days you don't have much time to move around, as there is much to see in both areas.

Aix is the closest town to MRS, about 20/min drive while St. Remy is about 45/min-1/hr.

If you have a full 7/days you can certainly extend your time between the St.Remy/Aix area, maybe 3-1/2, then to Nice to enjoy the towns along the Cote d'Azur to the Italian border, the remaining time.

Decide which are the "must see" towns in these area, let us know and I'm sure there will be enough comments to advise what is doable and what isn't.
