We flew into Nice, and spent most time along the Riviera, but made trips to Vence and St. Paul which were only about 10 minutes apart. Vence is a typical Medieval warranting only a one hour stop. We should have spent more time in St.Paul. It was the least touristy place we went to. Eze is touristy, but worth the time to see the view from high atop the cliffs. There is a B&B in Eze that is the best we've ever seen!!

Provence is a big region. Arles, especially for May 1st, is great. The Arlesiennes wear traditional dress because it is still the local custom for the holiday, not to please the tourists. Buy "santons" the creche figures that recreate 18th century village life. Go into the Camargue, the saltwater swamps--ride the famous white ponies along the Mediterranean under a sky full of flamingos. Go to Isle sur la Sorgue on market Saturday and buy hand ground mustard, fresh-spiced olives and a young spit roast pheasant -- eat the above next to a 200 year old waterwheel paddling the green, green water of the Sorgue. Stay in Venasque, a tiny village in the Comtat Venaissin designated as one of the "villages of great charm"by the French government. Book the Maison des Volets Bleu and thank god and Madame for heaven.

We spent two weeks in Isle-sur-Sorgue last May. Wonderful place and wonderful people. Our high points were the hill villages -- Gordes, Rousillon, Seguret, Sauman-de-Vaucluse,Beaumes-de-Venise, Gigondas, Vaison-la-Romaine. We would cross off Aix. Spend more time in Avignon. We like Orange and Arles. Les Baux was interesting. The Sunday market is something else in Isle-sur-Sorgue.

Provence Area:
Eze--"Chateau de la Chevre d'Or" is located on hilltop of the village and provides a beautiful view.
St. Paul de Vence--my favorite, really a neat area
Nice:---lots of good restaurants,crowded.
Cannes:fun to go,take train on over to Monte Carlo--just takes a short time to get there.
Have fun!

We stayed in Provence in august 96. It was high season, and we had some problems finding hotel rooms. The first night we slept in the car, but thereafter we stayed in "Logis de France" hotels which are relatively cheap and excellent. Nyons in the northern part of Provence is an excellent place to stay. Nils

I've spent many many summers in La Ciotat, which is next to Bandol. The crowds are all a part of the charm. But bring along a lot of patience. I prefer to travel in the very begining of June. The kids are in school still, meaning much less crowds, and the days are at thier longest and the weather is wonderful. Anyone need info, don't hesitate to drop me a line. I love to talk about France.
