Outstanding Hotel Value in Rothenburg
We just returned from 2 weeks in Germany and Austria and we stayed in one particular hotel that inspired me to submit this (the first time ever). Hotel Hornburg is a short walk from the train station and ideally located just outside the medieval wall around old Rothenburg. It has about 10 huge rooms, each beautifully decorated and with fully equipped, modern bathrooms. The breakfast area is also beautifully decorated with a tremendous selection of breakfast items.
The hotel is owned and operated by Martin and Gabriele who were always there. They speak excellent English (they have driven the US coast to coast) and couldn't do enough for us in regards to our comfort, recommended restaurants and sightseeing. They have 2 gentle and well behaved Golden Retreivers that befriended everybody.
All this for DM125($75) to DM155($93) for a large family room! In 15 years of international travel this was one of the best and most enjoyable hotel values we have ever experienced. Highly recommended.

Royce, We leave for Germany in a week and Rothenburg is on our itinerary, arriving on April 27, for two nights. We travel by bicycle and so our date of arrival is not always firm. Do you think we would find a room here without reservations? Thanks for the tip. Also caught your post on Frommer's. Direct email OK.

Erika: We have taken Royce's advice and will be staying at Hotel Hornburg April 27&28. Their email address is [email protected]. We made our reservations via email and they faxed us the confirmation.

Elizabeth, We visited Rothenburg, Dachau just outside Munich, Fussen and Nueschwanstein Castle, Lindau, and St. Gallen in Switz. We found Lindau surprisingly nice! St. Gallen was worth it just because of the church and the Abbey Library. The Dachau concentration camp is a very emotional experience. If you go be sure and see the English language film shown only at 11:30 and 2:30 I think. We saw the 11:30. Between Bavaria and the Rhine is tough! We saw the Rhine area about 14 years ago so it may not be fair for us to judge. I just remember that the castles lined up and down the river were something else! You didn't mention Austria which is by far our favorite Alp country. Maybe more convenient too since you mentioned Prague as part of your itinerary. Austria is also cheaper than Germany and Switzerland. You can e-mail me if you want to discuss the merits of Austria more. Royce
