Provence

Hi, my wife and teenage son are planning to visit Provence in the first week of May for 4-5 days. We will be driving from Nice, wondering if anyone has a suggestion on whether it's better to stay in one place and do short exploratory trips. We like to explore the countryside, do some moderate hikes, enjoy classical music concerts, and visit historical sites.

Leaving aside the fact that Nice is in Provence, whether to opt for a base location or to change locations really depends on what you want to see and experience and your preferences / tolerance for changing hotels.

FWIW, the Michelin Green Gide for Provence is excellent and would, I think, provide you with a wealth of information that would help you plan.

Provence is a large area and 4-5 days is not much time. No way to answer your question. Agree with the Michelin Green book suggestion.

It depends on your destination, but typically it is better to have one base and drive around (or max two, if they are very far apart). But you need to very specific of which area you are interested in, as it is a very wide and broad area.
